Siege of Danzig

Arc de Triomphe: DANTZIG

March 11, 1807 - May 27, 1807

The strategic port of Danzig needed to be secured by the French to prevent interference from enemy troops for their campaign of 1807. Napoleon sent Marshal Lefebvre and the X Corps to direct the siege against Count Kalkreuth and his Prussian garrison. A relief force of Russian troops was dropped off by a Russian and English fleet, but Marshal Lannes and the Reserve Corps arrived to take part in the siege and stop the relief. Later, Marshal Mortier and the VIII Corps arrived to also assist. After two months, the siege was successful and Napoleon formed Danzig into an independent city free from Prussian control.
