Battle of Dürenstein
Arc de Triomphe: DIERNSTEIN
November 11, 1805
As La Grande Armée advanced across Austria, General Gazan's division of Marshal Mortier's VIII Corps crossed the Danube and pursued what they thought were retreating Austrians and Russians. Instead, a trap had been laid and the Allied force attacked, mauling Gazan's division. The arrival of Dupont's division to assist and nightfall enabled the French to escape destruction despite heavy casualties. Afterwards, the Allies continued to retreat against the advance of Napoleon's army.
