Battle of Montereau
Arc de Triomphe: MONTEREAU
February 18, 1814
The Austrian army under Marshal Schwarzenberg had begun to fall back after the defeat at Valjouan. Their rearguard took up a position at Montereau to cover the retreat when the French arrived in pursuit. Napoleon launched an attack on the town, and since the Austrians were backed up to the river their rearguard was unable to retreat once the French had seized the bridges.
