Battle of Talavera
July 27, 1809 - July 28, 1809
A combined British-Spanish force of about 55,000 soldiers commanded by Sir Arthur Wellesley met a French force of about 46,000 troops under Marshal Jourdan. The French launched multiple attacks, but all were repulsed, and afterwards they withdrew towards Toledo. Despite the British victory, Wellesley was forced to fall back to Portugal as Marshal Soult's army was moving to cut him off.
