Battle of Arcola

Arc de Triomphe: ARCOLE
November 15, 1796 - November 17, 1796
Hoping to prevent the Austrians from relieving Mantua, French General Bonaparte led an audacious attack against the rear of Baron Alvinczi's force. Colliding at Arcola, the desperate battle led to General Bonaparte grabbing a flag on the bridge to encourage his men, only to be pushed into the mud by his aide Muiron who was then killed. After very fierce fighting over three days, the Austrians finally withdrew.
