Battle of Wattignies

Arc de Triomphe: WATTIGNIES
October 15, 1793 - October 16, 1793
The French army led by General Jourdan moved to lift the siege of Maubeuge, the last fortress blocking the Austrian's route to Paris. Austrian Field Marshal Josias of Coburg commanded an Austrian force standing in the way of the French relief force. Despite initial setbacks, after two days of fighting the French were successful in pushing back the Austrians. The Austrian army withdrew and lifted the siege of Maubeuge, ensuring that Paris was free from foreign intervention again.
